Big Data…and the end of HR (as we know it)

Big dataWatermark Search International recently held a client breakfast with Directioneering, where the topic was “Big Data…and the end of HR (as we know it)”. Gareth Bennett was the speaker and he was in his element, having a very strong HR background and a depth of understanding around the role that Business Analytics play in day to day business.

The key takeaways were:

  • Big Data is right at the peak of the Gartner ‘Hype Cycle’*a place where expectations are inflated beyond the capacity of a technology to deliver. Nonetheless Big Data does have Big Potential.
  • Big Data by its very nature requires a significant data handling capability combined with the ability to analyse that data to create meaningful information. To create a meaningful outcome the business has to invest money and time to handle the data. Given the investment required the outcomes are most likely to be strategic in their level of ambition.
  • In the last 20 years the amount of time that HR leaders say they spend on strategy has not shifted significantly; it remains at 25%+.
  • HR leaders are not speaking the same language as the boardroom when it comes to using business analytics over business intuition.
  • The HR community only provides predictive analysis to the business in 4 out of every 100 instances#.
  • The hard data is available to make the business case for increased retention, increased employee engagement and improved workplace well-being…it does not have to be an article of faith.
  • People analytics, and the subsequent strategies to address what the numbers show, have the ability to transform the role of HR and significantly increase its perceived significance to the business.
  • With Big Data comes Big responsibility. Do not underestimate the role the data privacy plays in collecting, storing and disseminating Big Data outputs.
