The Australian Rail Track Corporation Limited (ARTC) is a Federal Government Business Enterprise created after the Commonwealth and State Governments agreed in 1997 to the formation of a ‘one stop shop’ for all operators seeking access to the National interstate rail network.  ARTC plays a critical role in the transport supply chain and in the overall economic development of Australia.  Its network is used to move a range of commodities including general freight, coal, iron ore, other bulk minerals and agricultural products.  Its network is also important in providing access for interstate and inter-city passenger services.

At the end of 2014 ARTC engaged the services of Watermark Search to appoint a new Chair.

The brief:

An assessment of the Board’s skills and experiences highlighted multiple requirements for potential Chair candidates:

  • Investment banking, capital markets and corporate finance
  • Regulated infrastructure
  • Engineering and project management
  • Transport logistics and rail logistics
  • Currently / previously Chair
  • Currently / previously Non-Executive Director
  • Interaction with Government Stakeholders

Watermark’s solution:

Watermark began a Search on behalf of ARTC in December 2014.  Following an extensive search, ARTC were introduced to prospective Chair candidates who met their requirements.  ARTC subsequently recommended multiple candidates to the Federal Government.  A preferred candidate was chosen and offered the position of Chair.

The outcome:

In August 2015, Helen Nugent, then Chair of Veda Advantage and Non-Executive Director of Origin Energy Limited, and former Director of Funds SA and Macquarie Bank, was announced as ARTC’s new Chair.
