About TasPorts

TasPorts is a State-owned Company established under the Tasmanian Ports Corporation Act 2005 and incorporated under the Corporations Act 2001. It has two shareholders, the Treasurer and the Minister for Infrastructure. TasPorts’ principal objective is to facilitate trade for the benefit of Tasmania in a manner that is consistent with sound commercial practice.

TasPorts’ main statewide undertakings include the construction, operation and maintenance of port infrastructure, the provision of pilot services, the provision of towage services and the leasing and maintenance of buildings on port and adjacent premises.

Seeking Expressions of Interest

Watermark is currently assisting with the appointment of up to three new Directors and the Shareholders will appoint a Chair from the Directors. Candidates applying to be considered for Chairperson should be able to demonstrate contemporary experience in governance in the ports and maritime sectors.

The Directors will work with the Chairperson, other Board members and management to ensure that TasPorts conducts its business and affairs in a manner that is in accordance with sound commercial practice, conforms with relevant laws and is consistent with TasPorts Constitution. The challenge for the Board is to build on the current TasPorts culture and values to grow the business and maintain an excellent client satisfaction focus.

The Board must comprise Directors with an appropriate range of skills, experience, qualifications, expertise and vision to enable it to properly carry out its responsibilities in relation to the oversight of the management of the organisation.

We are seeking expressions of interest are open to all suitably qualified people who possess skills and experience in some of the following areas:

  • Governance, including within State Owned Companies

  • Infrastructure industries, ideally maritime and ports operations, transport/logistics, property

  • Finance, Capital Investment, Business Management, Corporate Strategy, Accounting & Audit

  • Senior executive experience in a relevant sector/industry

  • Risk, Safety, Environment management

  • People, Culture, WHS, IR expertise

  • Formal training in Governance is strongly preferred (GAICD, GIA or equivalent)

  • Chairing board committee meetings

In addition to the skills and experience listed above, the new Chairperson and Directors will have impeccable personal and professional integrity and an established and credible reputation that will have traversed public and private sectors. The ability to add value and contribute to Board decision-making and oversight are essential for all Board members.

In addition, the following personal qualities are required:

  • Sound and independent judgement

  • Sound business acumen

  • A genuine interest in the organisation and its business

  • Exceptional interpersonal and persuasion skills, including the ability to work well within a team and contribute to an effective Board culture

  • Strong public speaking, presentation and influencing skills; and

  • High-level business and community networks.

Term

Under TasPorts’ constitution these appointments will be as a non-executive director for an initial term of 3 years with appointment annually at the AGM by the Shareholder Ministers to the position of Chairperson.
